And yet they persist in being picky little twits. Of coarse, I just have to keep changing it up, which can be difficult, because I don't always remember what I bought within the past month or two. Especially since I did get a different flavor/texture for him. I know he enjoys the change of texture and taste, but he still primarily eats his food. But when the dogs started eating his food, he was quite happy to go over and eat theirs as well. Because both of them ate enough, I was usually able to change bags about once a month. But for some reason, he's always complained if the food was the same month after month. My other cat much preferred to just eat whatever cat food was put in front of her, she didn't care if it was the same old, same old. But he's always been easily bored with too much of the same food. My cat doesn't choose it over the cat food. And no, it wasn't because she ate dog food, she didn't care for it like my current cat does. I'll just start giving him the new bag, and see how fast it goes down, since my other cat recently died. This is, I believe, part of the reason he also eats the dog food, it's a different texture and taste, and hasn't harmed him the least so far. I did buy a small bag of high protein cat food, since the cat gets bored with his kibble, and always wants a different bag when he's done with the current bag. I won't try to change that, since the dogs have never gorged on their food, and usually have kibble in there for quite a while before I need to put more in.

My cat has always eaten some of the dog food, which I can't prevent because everyone has grown up free feeding. I don't have anywhere else to put the cat food, so the dog sometimes polishes off the cat bowl. I have a small breed dog that can be quite sneaky, managing to sometimes get into the cat closet. I have a closet that my cat can get into, where his food is. And yes, my cat and dogs do still steal from each other, but they are primarily eating their own food. So please leave me alone, my critters are doing just fine. It's not necessarily the right thing for them to eat, but if they are healthy, they can sometimes eat the "wrong" food. But seriously, cats and dogs won't fall over dead because they've eaten food that doesn't meet their dietary needs.

Shove the bag back into the box it came in, tape it up, and ship it back.Īnd as for everyone that has been telling me how I'm doing things wrong, I accept that I should have made things a bit more clear. It's a mistake, but at least the company is paying for the item to be shipped back. Or if the order just provided them with a brand name, it's understandable that they would have just picked a different item with the same brand name. If they were given a barcode, it's understandable that they wouldn't have known that the order was for cat food.

I suspect that the person that sent the wrong food, they probably just saw a partial order or barcode, and didn't have full access to the brand and species information. And if the wrong food is delivered, then don't freak out, and accept that it's possible for a mistake to be made. However, I don't advocate freaking out if your cat or dog eats some kibble, or wet food, designed for the other species. Some may be quite adjusted to a free feeding schedule, others requiring a scheduled meal time. It's going to depend upon your situation, and how you've raised your cat/dog household. He never ate much, and the dogs didn't care, since they would help us with leftovers as well.ĭespite my experiences, I don't advocate that everyone switch to free feeding their dogs, and definitely don't support the idea of a combined cat/dog household go with just one type of food. Even so, the cats would sometimes lose whole bowlfuls of food due to the cleverness of one dog, and my one cat would help himself to the dog food whenever he wanted. Despite that, everyone generally did well with eating their own food, once we moved the cat food into areas the dogs couldn't easily get into. It's not always been easy, since the dogs do prefer the high protein cat food, and one of my cats (the surviving one) preferring to vary his diet with cat and dog food, as well as the occasional live bird.Įveryone is indoor/outdoor, with the cats enjoying being able to get outside of the backyard at will. Everyone is in a good weight range, and has been accustomed to sharing a house with food being free fed for all.

I've had the two species integrated since 2018, and haven't had any real issues. I have two dogs, and a cat (did have two cats until a recent death, unrelated to food issues). I understand that everyone has their opinions on the care and feeding of their very important critters/pets.
